Getting to Pelion Muse

By Train · By Car · By Plane

Closer than it looks

"Pelion Muse sits just outside Volos in the village of Ano Gatzea — reachable by train, car or plane, with the Moutzouris station literally at the door."

From Athens or Thessaloniki, the Pelion peninsula is a comfortable half-day by road, a scenic intercity train to Volos, or a short hop to Nea Anchialos Airport. Below are the three main ways to reach us. Tell us how you're travelling and we'll help with transfers, rental cars and timings.

Intercity to Volos, then to the village

Hellenic Train runs daily intercity services from Athens and Thessaloniki to Volos, usually with a single change at Larissa. From Volos, Ano Gatzea is a short 20-minute taxi ride — or, in season, a scenic ride on the historic Moutzouris narrow-gauge Pelion train, which stops right beside the house.

The intercity journey is relaxing and the Volos station is easy to navigate. We're happy to arrange a private transfer from Volos station to the house.

  • Athens → Volos: ~4.5 hrs intercity via Larissa, several daily departures
  • Thessaloniki → Volos: ~2.5 hrs intercity via Larissa
  • Volos → Ano Gatzea: 20 min by taxi, or the Moutzouris Pelion train (seasonal)
  • Booking: hellenictrain.gr — reserve a week ahead in summer
  • At the house: the Moutzouris station is right next door — perfect for a day trip to Milies

Down the E75 motorway

The simplest route is the E75 / A1 motorway that connects Athens and Thessaloniki. Exit at Volos, skirt the ring road, and climb into the Pelion villages on a well-signposted provincial road. The final stretch through olive groves into Ano Gatzea is one of our favourite parts of the drive.

Rental cars are available at every major airport and at Volos station. A car is useful (though not essential) for exploring the mountain villages, beaches and tavernas of Pelion — we can recommend local agencies with good rates.

  • Athens → Pelion Muse: ~4 hrs / 330 km via E75
  • Thessaloniki → Pelion Muse: ~2.5 hrs / 210 km via E75
  • Volos → Pelion Muse: 20 min / 15 km on the Pelion ring road
  • Parking: free on-street parking outside the house
  • Tip: fill up in Volos — village petrol stations keep shorter hours

Fly in via Athens or Thessaloniki

The two main airports for reaching Pelion are Athens International (ATH) and Thessaloniki Makedonia (SKG). Thessaloniki is closer and often the faster choice for European travellers, while Athens offers the widest international connections. A third option — and the shortest transfer of all — is Nea Anchialos (VOL), Volos's own airport, served seasonally by charters from the UK, Germany and Scandinavia.

Pick up a rental car at the airport, or continue by intercity train; we're happy to arrange a private transfer door-to-door.
